When I was in Sydney I did a quick run through an IGA store in Blaxland and wrote down a few prices I knew I could check as a comparison of prices once I got back to Thailand.

IGA is maybe not the cheapest around but it gives a reasonable basis for this very simple shopping list.

I have used a Tesco Lotus supermarket here, which compares with any Australian supermarket in the range and quality of products offered. We normally buy meat and vegetables in the local street markets, which would be slightly cheaper again on average.

In simplistic terms the staple items one buys as a foreigner here, that the Thais generally don’t, can be as expensive as in Australia for example breakfast cereal, all the packaged sauces – BBQ, spaghetti, tomato etc.

Where we really win over here is in the basic fresh foodstuffs. Meats, fish, vegetables and fruits are mostly a fraction of the cost and usually a lot fresher than anything you’d find in Woollies.
