Driving to Nai Harn beach via a back road I came across a sign to Thailand Yes Coffee, a coffee business and cafe. For those who know me this was an invitation not to be missed.
A short drive brings you to a large white building set in farmland and the appearance of most of the staff, who must not get too many visitors this time of year. The manager or maybe the guy who knew the most English, a Mr Son Kyo Jin, showed us around. Everyone here is super friendly and it is worth a visit just to feel so special.
The beans obviously aren’t grown locally but are sourced from the Doitung region of Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand. Coffee was introduced here 30 years ago by the King as an alternative cash crop to replace poppies, the Golden Triangle’s main cash crop at the time. Coffee has grown to be a big business providing coffee for export, Thailand’s growing middle class and the tourist cafes.
Thailand Yes Coffee have two roasters. The machine at the back on the left, which does smaller batches and a larger commercial drum roaster, the one in the middle of the rear wall. Both are located in an immaculate room. You can see the sorting table on the left side where green beans are inspected before being roasted:
The next room is equally beautifully maintained and presented. It is where the roasted beans are packed for sale and distribution. Yes Coffee supply a couple of outlets in Phuket and also Bangkok.
The third part of the building is a very modern and smart coffee shop and cafe:
The young lady barista is very serious about her job and they have an impressive modern coffee machine. She produces a very decent coffee.
Having left my beautiful Italian Isomac coffee machine in storage it was with some relief I was able to replace it for only $5.00 and get some fresh coffee too. Nescafe 3 in 1 has it’s uses but drinking isn’t necessarily at the top of the list!
So if you are a coffee enthusiast or just want a decent brew be sure you call in and see Son and the team.
